A survey conducted in March of this year confirmed that data center owners and operators in New York and the Tri-State area are facing issues with managing cost reduction whilst maintaining service levels. Reduced CAPEX and OPEX requirements combined with risk management in the wake of natural disasters such as Hurricane Sandy are forcing data center operators in the area to re-evaluate strategic plans for their portfolio and make decisions that would have been unlikely 24 months ago.
According to results of the survey, it appears as though many operators are struggling to find a balance between cost and risk. The survey discovered that there is not always a match between what an operator would prefer to implement in order to reduce cost and what they actually implement.
The above leads to the questions on whether or not operators have yet to fully align their cost reduction strategies with overall risk mitigation or if operators are now having to accept that occasionally decisions have to be made that may increase the risk to the business?
