NCPDP Hosts Educational Webinar on SNOMED CT

SCOTTSDALE, AZ — (Marketwired) — 06/12/13 — The (NCPDP) announced today its upcoming educational webinar: “,” on Thursday, June 20, 2013, at 12:00 p.m. EDT. The webinar will provide an overview of the clinical terminology, its benefits and relationship to other terminologies, implementation within electronic health records (EHRs), role in and impact on data analytics and patient care.

(Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine Clinical Terms) is the world-s most comprehensive clinical terminology system, offering more than 311,000 active concepts and definitions organized into hierarchies that can be embedded in software applications and EHRs to represent clinically relevant information reliably and consistently and foster information systems interoperability. SNOMED CT has been designated as a US standard for electronic health information exchange (HIE) and adopted for use by the federal government. Under Stage 2 meaningful use requirements for EHRs, the patient-s problem list must be coded with SNOMED CT. Several standards NCPDP has developed to help the pharmacy and healthcare industries achieve greater connectivity and deliver higher quality, safer and more efficient and cost-effective care use SNOMED CT.

The webinar will be presented by Peter Hendler, MD who is co-chair of the RIM-based Application Architecture Work Group, which works to facilitate the adoption and software implementation of HL7 standards. He is also the physician lead of the Convergent Medical Terminology group at in Oakland, California, and a practicing rheumatologist at Kaiser.

The educational webinar is intended for those who are new to SNOMED CT; developers of EHR and pharmacy information systems; hospitals and health systems implementing those solutions; and business managers and others who need to understand SNOMED CT requirements under Meaningful Use Stage 2 and how SNOMED CT differs from other medical terminologies, vocabularies and code systems.
