Health Catalyst Accelerates Improvements in Quality and Efficiency With New 2.0 Platform Release

SALT LAKE CITY, UT — (Marketwired) — 07/22/13 — , the leader in healthcare data warehousing, today introduced , a significant expansion of the company-s enterprise data warehouse (EDW) and analytics platform that accelerates healthcare organizations- ability to improve performance in response to emerging payment pressures.

Health Catalyst 2.0 dramatically increases the speed of client implementations due to the following advances:

Improved automation of metadata gathering from multiple source IT systems that is mapped into the data warehouse. These changes require fewer client resources, create fewer mapping errors and improve implementation speeds by up to eight times.

Powerful new content-driven applications that turn the EDW-s data into action, automating and standardizing improvements simultaneously across multiple clinical and operational processes.

Together, the technology upgrades enable clients to more quickly identify and implement the discrete changes in process and behavior required for success under private and public value-based payment programs.

The Health Catalyst 2.0 Late-Binding Data Warehouse helps clients build the information foundation for value-based performance faster, more efficiently and more predictably.

In a recent pilot of the EDW-s new capabilities at (IU Health), Indiana-s most comprehensive healthcare system, Health Catalyst created a centralized repository of core clinical, financial and patient satisfaction information from across multiple IU Health hospitals in 90 days — a feat that IU Health CIO Bill McConnell called “unprecedented.” The resulting 14-billion-row data warehouse — representing more than 10 years of clinical, financial and patient satisfaction data — jump-started IU Health-s goal of using data to improve the quality of patient care while driving down cost.

The Health Catalyst 2.0 EDW not only speeds the creation of a client-s data warehouse but also accelerates, by a factor of eight, the process of acquiring and mapping metadata from a health system-s multiple transactional information systems. And the platform-s metadata-driven extract/transform/load (ETL) routines, which move the mapped data from transactional systems into the EDW, are an estimated 20 times faster than current methods of creating ETL routines.

“One of the most time-consuming and error-prone activities in building and operating a data warehouse is bringing in new source transactional systems and mapping all the elements into the target structure in the data warehouse,” said Thomas Burton, Senior Vice President of Product and Development and Co-Founder of Health Catalyst. “Health Catalyst has developed platform tools that automate the management of this process, making it far less resource intensive, less prone to error and phenomenally faster.”

Once in the EDW, data from multiple source systems is combined with metric and algorithm definitions stored in robust content repositories, feeding a growing list of Health Catalyst 2.0 content-driven applications. Health Catalyst 2.0 deploys with 14 standard analytics applications and a framework that enables rapid development of hundreds of new applications to solve both basic and complex reporting needs for a healthcare delivery system.

, one of the foundational applications included in the base Health Catalyst 2.0 product, marks a breakthrough in population health management analytics. In just one dashboard, users can explore key metrics across 1,000 registries — the equivalent of 1,000 dashboards of administrative, patient satisfaction and clinical data — to reveal a broad view of different patient populations by case counts, readmission rates, charges, revenue and length of stay, among up to 100 other metrics.

Highly intuitive, Population Explorer also enables clinical and other non-IT staff to write their own inclusion and exclusion criteria and build their own population cohorts to meet their specific information needs. This self-service report-building capability relieves overburdened IT staff and rapidly distributes knowledge throughout the organization.

“Each click in Population Explorer produces a context-rich view of data and trends that would have taken weeks or months to produce using the typical hospital approach of adding a report request to the IT queue,” said Burton. “It-s the equivalent of 1,000 dashboards of patient data but with a flexible rules engine that lets non-IT users add rules to their cohort definitions and metrics so they can instantly see the impact. Population Explorer quickly gives answers to clinician questions, so they can quickly understand populations of patients.”

Health Catalyst is rapidly developing additional analytics applications to satisfy clients- growing needs for content-rich analytics to inform, guide and monitor performance improvement.

To turn the insights from Health Catalyst 2.0 technologies into outcomes, Health Catalyst provides cross-functional teams of clinical and technical resources that help clients organize, implement and deploy discrete clinical improvement programs. With Health Catalyst 2.0, clients can support multiple performance improvement efforts simultaneously across several clinical and operational areas. The bottom line: clients are able to implement changes in process and behavior much faster and more broadly, scaling the systematic improvement of clinical quality and operational efficiency.

“Health Catalyst 2.0 is what healthcare needs today to meet the ever-increasing challenge of improving the quality and cost-effectiveness of care,” said Dan Burton, CEO of Health Catalyst. “Our iterative step-by-step process enables our clients to accelerate performance improvement within their organizations and ultimately make a positive difference in the lives of patients. Health Catalyst 2.0 significantly increases our clients- ability to achieve real improvement.”
