During the “Certified and Compliant” roundtable discussion, E-World Online CEO Bob Erie outlined guidelines for sustaining an expansive national network of certified-responsible recyclers. Erie referenced how E-World Online-s Manufacturer Interstate Take-back System (MITS) incorporates a streamlined software platform to ensure front-end (recyclers) and back-end (manufacturers or government officials) users can easily track the flow of materials as well as its reporting functionality which verifies that materials are being handled responsibly to provide needed accountability. Attending nations, most of which are in the very early stages of building e-waste recycling capacity and corresponding take-back regulation, learned of the advantages to this approach and were pleasantly surprised by the cost benefit of the system due to its efficiencies. Moderated by Lisa Feldt, deputy assistant administrator of the EPA-s Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response, the panel also included Pat Furr of Computers for Classrooms, Larry King of SIMS Recycling and Dennis Kazarian of E-Recycling of California.
Representatives from over a dozen countries including India, China, Mexico, Brazil and Nigeria, attended the GEM Network meeting to discuss best practices and lessons learned from the nation-s e-waste thought leaders.
