E-World Online Tapped by EPA to Guide Developing Nations on E-Waste

VISTA, CA — (Marketwired) — 07/31/13 — E-World Online, the nation-s leading provider of comprehensive , shared insights into successful and sustainable national e-waste take-back solutions with developing countries from Asia, Africa and the Americas at this year-s meeting in San Francisco earlier this month. The GEM Network is a collaborative effort between the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Environmental Protection Administration of Taiwan (EPAT) to build global capacity for the environmentally sound management of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), or e-waste, by bringing environmental officials from different nations together to exchange experiences and best practices. The meeting is an invitation-only event with speakers individually selected by the EPA.

During the “Certified and Compliant” roundtable discussion, E-World Online CEO Bob Erie outlined guidelines for sustaining an expansive national network of certified-responsible recyclers. Erie referenced how E-World Online-s Manufacturer Interstate Take-back System (MITS) incorporates a streamlined software platform to ensure front-end (recyclers) and back-end (manufacturers or government officials) users can easily track the flow of materials as well as its reporting functionality which verifies that materials are being handled responsibly to provide needed accountability. Attending nations, most of which are in the very early stages of building e-waste recycling capacity and corresponding take-back regulation, learned of the advantages to this approach and were pleasantly surprised by the cost benefit of the system due to its efficiencies. Moderated by Lisa Feldt, deputy assistant administrator of the EPA-s Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response, the panel also included Pat Furr of Computers for Classrooms, Larry King of SIMS Recycling and Dennis Kazarian of E-Recycling of California.

Representatives from over a dozen countries including India, China, Mexico, Brazil and Nigeria, attended the GEM Network meeting to discuss best practices and lessons learned from the nation-s e-waste thought leaders.

“It-s an amazing opportunity to be able to share decades of experience and information on what works and the best ways to go about developing a national e-waste solution with the officials who will personally be leading these initiatives for their countries,” said Erie. “Having been a part of the e-waste industry-s birth here in the US, it-s an honor that the EPA has recognized E-World as an expert and gave us the opportunity to guide the shaping of the industry in other countries.”

E-World Online will surpass 200 million pounds of end-of-life electronics and returned merchandise managed in the US through its MITS and Retail Return Program (RRP) by yearend. Through a creative software platform, MITS and RRP unify the collection of data collected across a national network of over 22,000 drop off locations that feed 40 processing facilities in 25 different states. According to statistical data collected by e-MRG, E-World Online-s proprietary software that powers both national solutions, MITS collected over 120 million pounds of e-waste from 2010 through 2012, with an additional 84 million pounds projected to be collected and processed in 2013. The RRP, which has been used by Costco Wholesale Corporation in all of its US locations since 2011, has already managed over 15 million pounds of returned material, giving Costco the granular data tracking capabilities to understand the sales and recycling movement of over 2 million individual items.
