AUSTIN, TX — (Marketwired) — 09/03/13 — The Austin Technology Council (ATC) today announced that Central Texas U.S. Congressmen Lamar Smith (R-TX 21), Chairman of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, and Michael McCaul (R-TX 10), Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, will participate in the ATC Chairmen-s Forum on Cybersecurity on September 5.

These members of Congress hold jurisdiction and oversight over many facets of the direction of U.S. and global technology interests and are positioned to champion Texas technology and U.S. leadership in developing a secure and innovative tech sector.

Cybersecurity is of paramount importance to emerging and established tech, governments and consumers worldwide. Network security impacts the success and failure of innovators and diplomats and the paths of researchers and scientific discovery.

The Chairmen will be joined on stage by cybersecurity experts Admiral Bobby R. Inman, Lyndon B. Johnson Centennial Chair in National Policy at the University of Texas LBJ School of Public Affairs and Dr. Fred Chang, newly appointed Bobby B. Lyle Endowed Centennial Distinguished Chair in Cyber Security at SMU-s Lyle School of Engineering.

“This is a clear example of the unique value of our market — this forum could easily be taking place on Capitol Hill,” said Julie Huls, president, Austin Technology Council. “We are fortunate to bring this event to Austin so our tech leaders can engage directly in the discussion about the security threats, solutions and policies that will shape global tech trends.”

During the Chairmen-s Forum, ATC will also announce Alan Schoenbaum, general counsel at Rackspace, as founding chair of the ATC Stakeholder Advisory Council. The council will serve as an advocacy voice in support of the ATC Board-s mission to strengthen and promote the technology industry in the Central Texas region.

“Central Texas is home to one of America-s leading technology communities. Tech companies here face many new challenges and opportunities,” said Schoenbaum. “We understand that upcoming public policy initiatives and legislative action will be critical to our future success. The ATC Stakeholder Advisory Council intends to advance the interests of the regional tech community among elected officials and other stakeholders in Washington D.C. and Texas to implement meaningful policy solutions which will benefit the entire technology industry.”

The Chairman-s Forum takes place from 8 – 10 am at the AT&T Conference Center on Thursday, September 5. It is open to the public. .

With more than 7,500 members and friends, 1,200 C-level executive members, and 200 member companies, the Austin Technology Council (ATC) has been focused on the growth and success of the Austin tech community since 1994.
