Transition Networks Unveils New 10Gigabit Ethernet Copper to Fiber Media Conversion Products to Support the 10GBase-T Standard at the BICSI Fall Conference & Expo

LAS VEGAS, NV — (Marketwired) — 09/16/13 — Transition Networks Inc., the fiber access technology expert, a wholly owned subsidiary of Communications Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JCS), today announced the release of its new ION 10Gigabit Ethernet copper to fiber media converter at the BICSI Fall Conference & Exhibition in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Hotel & Convention Center. The new ION x4120-1048 is the latest addition to Transition Networks- ION Platform, a family of intelligent optical networking devices. Designed for datacenters and high speed connections linking buildings in campus area networks, the ION x4120-1048 serves to meet the growing demand for products that support the 10GBase-T IEEE 802.3an standard.

Network managers have a current need to resolve disparities between new equipment with 10GBase-T ports and legacy 10Gigabit Ethernet products with fiber ports. Additionally, network managers are faced with the task of converting RJ-45 copper ports to fiber, or vice versa, to maximize their return on investment of new 10Gigabit Ethernet switches that support both open SFP+ ports for fiber and RJ-45 ports for copper. The ION x4120-1048 addresses these network challenges by converting between one 10GBase-T RJ-45 port and one pluggable, MSA compatible 10GBase-X fiber SFP+ port. This gives network managers the flexibility to run 10Gigabit Ethernet over the medium of their choice at various transmission distances.

Power consumption is an additional concern, particularly for data center operators. Aligned with today-s energy consumption trends, the ION x4120-1048 meets the IEEE 802.3az Energy-Efficient Ethernet standard by detecting UTP cable length and reducing power consumption accordingly.

“Delivering innovative and robust networking solutions is the cornerstone of the ION Platform,” says Kevin Faulds, Director of Product Management, “and the ION x4120-1048 reinforces that theme by providing energy efficient media conversion for 10GBase-T environments.”

The ION x4120-1048 is available in both stand-alone and chassis card form factors. The stand-alone unit offers the unique feature of in-band remote management when linked to a managed chassis card. This, coupled with Transparent Link Pass Through, Loopback, DMI, and Automatic Link Restoration network trouble shooting features of the ION x4120-1048, provides network managers with end-to-end link visibility.

Stand-alone and slide-in card form factor versions for the 10Gigabit Ethernet copper to fiber media converter are now available. Please contact Transition Networks at (800) 526-9267 or +1-952-941-7600. You can also visit for the latest information.
