Active Broadband Networks to Demonstrate Software-Defined Networking (SDN) Broadband Service Switch at SCTE Cable-Tec Expo

FRAMINGHAM, MA — (Marketwired) — 10/16/13 — , the leading supplier of software-defined broadband service management solutions, today announced that it will demonstrate a software-defined networking (SDN) broadband service switch at the upcoming in Atlanta, GA. Based on Intel technology, this new class of fully programmable, high-performance switching element running Active Broadband-s Linux-based switching software, when deployed in conjunction with Active Broadband-s SDN controller — the ) — enables network operators to deploy an intelligent service layer at the broadband edge for delivering dynamically managed broadband applications and services monetized by connection speed, bandwidth consumption, time of day and application type. The DBSM-controlled broadband service switch exploits the capabilities of software-defined networking to gain full visibility into and direct control over subscriber traffic flows at the broadband edge, allowing operators to grow revenue with highly dynamic, on-demand services, protect revenue by aligning pricing with bandwidth consumption and improve subscriber quality of experience by managing network utilization.

“Software-defined networking is having widespread impact on service provider network architectures, from large-scale data centers in the cloud right out to the subscriber edge,” said Jeff Finkelstein, Executive Director of Strategic Architecture at Cox Communications. “Active Broadband-s service switch demonstration is further validation that SDN is spawning a wave of technology innovation in broadband provider networks.”

The broadband service switch is controlled using the OpenFlow protocol and generates network stream telemetry data using IPFIX, a highly efficient and extensible IETF protocol that represents the state of the art in IP network telemetry. Active Broadband-s DBSM uses OpenFlow to dynamically activate services and directly implement service management policies for fine-grained control of subscriber traffic flows. The DBSM incorporates IPFIX for rapidly collecting telemetry data on traffic flows for real-time service management applications that require timely and accurate information about bandwidth consumption and network conditions.

“Programmability is at the core of software-defined networking,” said Adam Dunstan, CEO of Active Broadband. “We are leveraging SDN software and Intel platform technology to simplify the deployment of the dynamic services necessary for operators to continue to expand their product portfolios and cost-effectively drive revenue expansion.”

Active Broadband will demonstrate the capabilities of the new switch at the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo, Booth #505, October 21-24, 2013 in Atlanta, GA.

Active Broadband Networks is an innovative supplier of software-defined broadband service management solutions that power an intelligent service layer for dynamically managed broadband services. Founded in 2005 by a team of highly experienced networking industry executives and engineers, the company is transforming broadband service delivery by enabling operators to close the growing gap between satisfying the needs of their subscribers and meeting their own business objectives. Active Broadband-s Dynamic Broadband Service Manager (DBSM) has been successfully deployed by some of the world-s largest, most demanding broadband providers, helping them to ensure customer satisfaction and profitable service delivery.
