Healthy Eating Habits Take a Back Seat at the Office for America-s Working Professionals

NEW YORK, NY — (Marketwired) — 11/05/13 — The difference between a sluggish staffer and a productive employee could possibly be attributed to at-work eating habits, according to a new survey released today by , a division of GrubHub Seamless, the nation-s leading online and mobile food-ordering company. The survey reveals that employees often make poor food choices while in the office despite more than 60 percent of professionals claiming to understand the important role food plays in productivity and concentration.

To better understand the food choices made by employees on the job, Seamless Corporate Accounts surveyed nearly 1,000 full-time professionals in offices across the country. Key findings include:

60 percent admit that skipping meals impacts their moods, productivity and ability to concentrate

30 percent skip breakfast often, while 40 percent say they occasionally skip lunch

When asked about ordering food for colleagues, 80 percent admit that a food-s popularity plays the largest factor, followed by food being “easy to get” (70 percent), “easy to eat” (65 percent) and “comes at the right price point” (65 percent )

77 percent would eat more of certain foods if they knew it would support their work productivity

The also found that employers have a notable influence over employees- eating habits at the office. Seventy-four percent of respondents admit to eating something they normally wouldn-t, simply because it-s in front of them, such as candy at a meeting or a meal provided by their employer. However, only 18 percent of respondents say that their employers always provide healthy food options when food is offered at the office.

“Regardless of how often they provide food, employers have more of an impact on their worker-s eating habits than they may realize,” said Nick Worswick, vice president and general manager of corporate accounts at GrubHub Seamless. “Today, we help more than 4,000 companies across the country and London manage the food in their offices, and nearly all of them are looking to strike a balance between food being fun and food being a mechanism for driving productivity and sharpness. Based on what we found in this survey, that balance might just be the most well-received treat of all for employees.”
