Phononic Announces Support for Federal Effort to Reduce Hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) Emissions

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC — (Marketwired) — 09/24/14 — Phononic, a consumer products company reinventing cooling and heating, has announced its support for the federal government–s initiative to reduce the emission of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) as part of its Climate Action Plan. The Obama administration recently announced new private sector commitments and executive actions to reduce HFC emissions by the equivalent of 700 million metric tons of carbon dioxide through 2025 — initiatives that strongly align with Phononic–s mission of transforming how people think about cooling and heating.

HFCs are refrigerant gases used in refrigeration and air conditioning, originally introduced by the chemical industry to replace ozone-destroying chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). However, because of their carbon-based nature, HFCs are considered to be significant contributors to climate change, as they are more than 3,000 times more potent than CO2. Phononic is committed to providing sustainable, convenient, distributed and connected cooling and heating solutions through its solid state thermal management technology, eliminating the need for HFCs and toxic refrigerants found in traditional compressor-based technology. For this reason and others, the company–s mission aligns with public policy efforts that reduce HFC emissions through commitments from private sector organizations to lower their use of these refrigerants.

“For too long, the refrigeration and air conditioning industry has relied on outmoded technology that employs harmful gases like HFCs to provide cooling and heating,” said Tony Atti, CEO, Phononic. “It–s heartening to see companies step up to the plate to help reduce the use of these gases, and in Phononic–s case, eliminate them altogether. Because of this, we fully support public policy efforts in this regard.”

Recently, Phononic announced its new line of high-performing solid state refrigerators for laboratories, research centers and medical facilities — providing uniform and reliable cooling critical to the end-user without the noise, toxicity and other detriments of conventional refrigerators.

“We want the industry to know that effective cooling and heating can be achieved without the need for HFCs and toxic refrigerants, and it–s being done at Phononic today,” said Mike Demasi, VP and GM, Cold Products, Phononic. “Our medical and laboratory refrigerators are the first step in what we anticipate will be a transformation in cooling and heating across consumer, commercial and industrial markets”.
