University of Maine Delivers Video to Thousands of Students on Any Device With Wowza Streaming Engine

EVERGREEN, CO — (Marketwired) — 09/30/14 — , LLC, provider of Simply Powerful Streaming software, today announced that University of Maine is using Wowza Streaming Engine to deliver interactive video to thousands of students on any device, at any time. With Wowza Streaming Engine, UMaine delivers three terabytes of interactive video content to 2,000 students per semester, boosting learning outcomes and increasing student and faculty collaboration, while managing costs.

As the landscape in higher education continues to evolve with and increased budget cuts, colleges and universities are turning to technology like video streaming to drive innovative initiatives. By implementing technologies, like video streaming, they are able to not only attract and retain students, but also improve learning outcomes.

“Demand for video continues to grow, and implementing video streaming across all devices is no longer an option for universities, it–s a requirement,” said David Stubenvoll, CEO and co-founder of Wowza Media Systems. “Professors must not only record lectures, but also offer supplemental video that reinforces the course material in a compelling manner.”

Aiming to enhance biology education through technology and make course content more accessible, the UMaine School of Biology and Ecology–s set out to build a customized Learning Management System (LMS) to meet its needs. Wowza software was chosen to power its video streaming because of its seamless integration with existing applications, expanded mobile capabilities, unmatched affordability and ease of use.

“With Wowza we can do more with video streaming. The ability to deliver video efficiently and reliably to any device vastly benefits both faculty and students,” said Ron Kozlowski, director of UMaine–s BioMediaLab. “Our video streaming capabilities give students with different learning styles the ability to see things they wouldn–t see in a traditional classroom setting, and gives professors the ability to cater to students– needs and teach more effectively.”

Wowza Streaming Engine enables a seamless video workflow, so professors can upload their own video course materials. Wowza automatically converts files to the right format for immediate delivery to any device. This seamless workflow reduces the complexities of streaming, making it easy to create a blended learning environment that includes video. Wowza also delivered much-needed flexibility to UMaine–s hosting environment. Now, the video platform runs on a 24-core, solid-state drive Linux server, eliminating cumbersome, multi-step processes.
