TIM Brasil and Xtera Deploy Optical 100G Network on Aerial Cables in North and Center West Brazil

DALLAS, TX — (Marketwired) — 12/16/14 — TIM Brasil, the fastest growing operator in Brazil, selected 100G optical networking equipment supplied by Xtera Communications, Inc., a leading global provider of optical networking solutions, for upgrading long-haul optical transmission infrastructure in north and center west Brazil. The upgraded infrastructure links Manaus, Porto Velho and Cuiabá. This deployment is part of TIM Brasil–s effort to upgrade a large ring in the northern part of Brazil with 100G technology, representing about 50% of the whole Brazilian territory. In conjunction with , which was also implemented with Xtera–s 100G and Raman solutions, this project brings a second route for high bandwidth connectivity and enhanced resiliency to Manaus and the entire North Region.

By illuminating the Manaus to Porto Velho fiber route (1,010 km) alongside the Porto Velho to Cuiabá route (1,645 km), TIM adds more than 2,600 km of high-capacity links into a region that is fast growing and hungry for more bandwidth. Both routes are made of aerial optical cables, exhibiting long spans and high-loss optical fibers. High capacity and long all-optical reach are enabled by Xtera–s Wise Raman technology that offers the industry–s most advanced Raman amplification solution, combining optical performance and operational excellence for 100G and 100G+ channel rates.

“The investments in innovation that enabled us to be the first operator to achieve multi terabit/s capacity with minimum regeneration in such challenging routes reinforce TIM–s commitment to improving and expanding its networks throughout Brazil,” said Cicero Olivieri, Director of Fixed & Transport Network of TIM Brasil. “This benefits not only our operations and customers but the population of the entire region by enabling cost effective broadband services.”

“We are extremely happy to have been given this new opportunity by TIM Brasil to once again demonstrate the value of Xtera–s 100G solution for high-capacity backbone infrastructure over diverse types of optical cables,” said Manuel Andrade, SVP Sales Americas of Xtera. “Our unique advanced, integrated and field-proven Raman optical amplification technology, backed by more than 16 years of R&D and 10+ years of commercial operation, has enabled TIM Brasil to implement a robust network that will support the demand for broadband services for many years to come.”

Xtera pioneered Raman optical amplification in backbone networks with its Wise Raman solution and the installation of in 2004. Xtera was also the (SD-FEC) in a commercial 100G network in 2011. In April 2013, Xtera launched for long-haul subsea cable systems. In December 2013, Xtera introduced the that makes possible a [Capacity x Reach] metric which exceeds, by a factor of six, what is normally achievable by today–s 100G optical transport systems that use Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFAs).

For terrestrial backbone networks, the multi-purpose Nu-Wave Optima optical networking platform delivers unrivaled line capacities of over existing fiber infrastructure with no intermediate regeneration. For unrepeatered applications, a capacity of .

TIM is the second largest carrier in Brazil, and the prepaid segment leader. It currently has more than 74 million customers, and holds a 27 percent market share in the country. Its positive performance is the outcome of the company–s innovation, which led major movements in the industry to make mobile services affordable to the population as a whole.

Another TIM focus is the quality of its network and service. In the three-year period through 2016, the company will invest upwards of 90 percent of the R$11 billion earmarked for investments in Brazil in infrastructure. To expand and improve its network, it took over assets such as Intelig (2009) and AES Atimus (2011), and undertakes special projects, such as the installation of a fiber optics network in Northern Brazil, through the LT Amazonas, enabling the digital inclusion of the population living in remote areas. The company also prioritizes transparency in its business and customer relationships. A milestone was the 2012 launch of the Portas Abertas (Open Doors) website (), which allows consumers to get to know the true picture of TIM–s coverage and its network enhancement and improvement projects.

TIM is still the only company in the telecommunications industry listed on the BM&FBOVESPA–s “New Market” segment, recognized as the highest level of corporate governance. On the stock exchange, it is also listed on the Corporate Sustainability Index (ISE) and on the Carbon Efficient Index (ICO2). For more information, go to , or .
