Qumulo Emerges From Stealth With World–s First Data-Aware Scale-Out Network-Attached Storage

SEATTLE, WA — (Marketwired) — 03/16/15 — , a new enterprise data storage company, came out of stealth today to introduce the world–s first data-aware scale-out network-attached storage (NAS). was designed by the inventors of scale-out NAS to help enterprises intelligently manage and store billions and trillions of files. Qumulo Core is generally available today and in production by leading customers in commercial high performance computing industries.

Qumulo Core builds real-time data analytics directly into storage, giving enterprises an unprecedented view of their data and storage resources at scale. With greater visibility into which data is most valuable, where it is stored, what users or applications are accessing what files, what should be archived, backed up or deleted, and why data grows, Qumulo–s customers report significant gains in workflow performance and storage efficiency.

“Most enterprise storage systems can–t store this much data at all. Those that can, don–t help at all with the primary problem: that of managing billions of digital assets,” said Peter Godman, Qumulo CEO and co-founder. “Enterprise data storage vendors have worked hard to make –buy more storage– the answer to every problem, but that doesn–t help businesses manage data. Qumulo has spent the last three years working hand in hand with customers to build the first data-aware scale-out NAS solution for the enterprise, enabling organizations to manage, store and curate an enormous number of digital assets with a simple, efficient and cost-effective new storage solution.”

Qumulo was founded by the inventors of scale-out NAS at Isilon Systems (acquired by EMC for $2.5 billion in 2010) and has attracted a team of proven entrepreneurs from Adobe, Amazon Web Services, Google, Microsoft and Wily Technology. Qumulo $40 million in Series B funding led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, bringing the total investment in the company to $67 million.

At the heart of Qumulo Core is the Qumulo Scalable File System (QSFS). QSFS was built from scratch and designed to take advantage of the price/performance economics of commodity hardware, flash and dense spinning disk. It is designed to be both read and write optimized, have high sequential and transactional performance, and efficiently handle small and large files.

Qumulo Core is a software application that runs as a user application on top of the Linux operating system, coupling rapid pace of innovation with software subscription pricing. Qumulo Core is a software-only solution that can be run on commodity hardware appliances provided by Qumulo, or on approved commodity storage server hardware.

Primary benefits of Qumulo Core include:

Real-time analytics – QSFS doesn–t just store data, but also curates and manages it

Software-only solution – Qumulo Core runs on commodity hardware, on dedicated appliances, or in virtual machines

Flash-first hybrid design – Maximizes both price/performance and price/capacity

SaaS software delivery model – Pay-as-you-go for continual infrastructure software innovation

No compromise storage – Optimized for the widest range of workloads and file size

100% programmable – Public and self-documenting REST API with interactive API explorer built into the web UI

The Qumulo Q0626 hybrid storage appliance is a 1U node that provides 24TB of raw HDD capacity and 1.6TB of raw SSD capacity. Qumulo–s data-aware scale-out NAS can be scaled from four to over 1000 nodes in a single cluster and single namespace.

Qumulo Core is the ideal solution for demanding unstructured data workloads in media and entertainment, life sciences, oil and gas, and other commercial high performance computing environments. Qumulo–s early customers include Ant Farm, Blind Studios, Densho, Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington, Sinclair Oil, Sportvision, TELUS Studios, University of Utah Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute, ZOIC Studios and many others.

Qumulo Core software and Qumulo Q0626 hybrid storage appliances are available immediately and are the first products in Qumulo–s data-aware scale-out NAS portfolio. Entry pricing for a four node 100TB raw capacity Qumulo Q0626 hybrid storage cluster begins at $50,000. For pricing and more information, email .

“When you have dozens of artists all working off of the same storage at the same time, it creates a challenge to the systems. Qumulo offers a new approach to what we really need from storage: total visibility into what–s happening and the data analytics to troubleshoot on a file-by-file basis or at the application level. It–s something we hadn–t seen from any other vendor and completely changes how we manage our storage resources.”
– Sam Frankiel, IT director,

“It is amazing how easy this is to use. There–s just one panel to check, a click of a button or two, typing in a name, and that–s it. I was very impressed with that. And from the first presentation, I had a sense that Qumulo puts the customer first, and I have not been disappointed. I have honestly never experienced anything like it.”
– Thai Do, director of technology,

“Qumulo–s real-time analytics are so much faster than native file-level calls, and it–s really cool to see all of the different ways to show and leverage that meta-data. I–ve got a queue of pending IT issues, and we–re always scrambling to fix things just like anybody else, but storage is just completely off that list now.”
– Geoff Froh, deputy director and CTO,

“Qumulo–s data-aware scale-out storage aligns with our mission of collecting massive amounts of data from hundreds of countries around the world to gain new insights into patterns of human disease.”
– James Bullard, director of IT services,

“What has us really excited about Qumulo is that now we can quickly determine what to save and what can be archived. That gives us a level of data lifecycle management we just didn–t have before.”
– Grant Turner, IT manager,

“I have been impressed with Qumulo–s stability and product integrity, the user interface, and particularly the real-time analytics. Knowing what is going on inside the storage system in real-time — what client is doing what to the system, the capacity explorer to understand my data footprint, and knowing who and what is consuming performance. Qumulo has hit it out of the park with the integrated real-time analytics.”
– Ronald Knol, senior technology consultant,

“Cheap and cheerful storage doesn–t cut it when it comes to our need for high performance, large shared capacity, and multiple parallel I/O paths. Qumulo meets these needs and is far less expensive than options from major storage vendors. We need really high performance I/O to process datasets that are much too large to fit into memory. Plus, having real-time visibility into our data is the icing on the cake.”
– Nick Rathke, assistant director, information technology,

“Qumulo–s real-time analytics at the heart of their storage very much excites us. Knowing who, what, where and how your data is being accessed or interrogated has been something most vendors focus on after the fact and is usually a post process that can take hours and impact production. For Zoic it–s a key driver in how we treat storage — which is more like a precious commodity. We now have the ability to correlate storage activity with our pipeline and make changes in real-time.”
– Saker Klippsten, CTO,

“Qumulo is poised to fundamentally change the way enterprises manage and store vast amounts of unstructured data. The challenge today is not one of managing petabytes of physical storage, but rather how to manage billions and billions of files and provide CIOs and storage administrators with real-time actionable information about their data footprint, usage and performance. This fundamentally changes the role of storage from being an IT cost center, to being a line of business productivity driver.”
– Arun Taneja, founder, president and consulting analyst,

Scale-out NAS inventors unveil and introduce the first data-aware scale-out NAS, #QumuloCore

Qumulo, headquartered in Seattle, pioneered data-aware scale-out NAS, which enables enterprises to manage and store enormous numbers of digital assets by building real-time analytics directly into the file system itself. Qumulo Core is a software-only solution designed to leverage the price/performance of commodity hardware coupled with the modern technologies of flash, virtualization and cloud. Qumulo was founded in 2012 by the inventors of scale-out NAS, and has attracted a team of storage innovators from Isilon, Amazon Web Services, Google, and Microsoft. Qumulo has raised $67 million in two rounds of funding from leading investors. For more information, visit .
