Frost & Sullivan Reveals Benefits of Powering Live-to-VOD Scenarios at the Network Edge via Just-in-Time Transcoding

MONTREAL, QC — (Marketwired) — 04/06/15 — , a global provider of media optimization and delivery solutions to mobile and video service providers, today announced the availability of a new whitepaper by global growth consulting firm Frost & Sullivan. The whitepaper provides a rigorous analysis showing operator TCO improvements gained by performing just-in-time transcoding (JITT) at the network edge to power the increasing demand for live-to-VOD services.

To date, the most popular paradigm for multiscreen media processing has been a just-in-time packaging (JITP) approach, driven by low cost storage, manageable content volumes and the high cost of transcoders. However, soaring content volumes and growing profile complexities, combined with the availability of low-cost ultra-high-density transcoding solutions, are shifting economics to JITT.

“In order for operators to efficiently meet the increased demand for today–s live-to-VOD media services, they must transition transcoding to the network edge,” said Jean Mayrand, CEO and president of Vantrix Corporation. “Live-to-VOD services such as catch-up TV, start-over TV and nDVR are core services for our customers, and this report highlights how shifting transcoding to the network edge can enable them to deliver the services that consumers want while dramatically reducing costs and being positioned for future growth.”

“To cope with projected volumes of sustained 24×7 live-to-VOD traffic, operators need to build out adequate transcoding capacity within their network,” said Avni Rambhia, Principal Analyst, Digital Media Group, Frost & Sullivan. “Our analysis shows that for continuous traffic patterns, the 5-year TCO of JIT transcoding at the edge is approximately half that of the prevalent just-in-time packaging approach, thanks to recent innovations in ultra-high-density transcoders running on COTS hardware.”

Vantrix will be demonstrating its Vantrix Media Platform at NAB 2015 in Las Vegas Booth SU12115.
