eTRIKS, the tranSMART Foundation and U-BIOPRED Open Source, Data Integration Knowledge Portal Personalizes Asthma Treatment

BOSTON, MA — (Marketwired) — 04/22/15 — (European Translational Information and Knowledge Management Services), and (unbiased biomarkers for the prediction of respiratory disease outcomes) today announced the success of the U-BIOPRED program in helping to make severe asthma treatment more personalized.

U-BIOPRED (led by and a 2014 Bio-IT World Best Practices Award winner) is nearing the end of its six year course. There are 135 researchers across 27 organizations actively analyzing what is the largest and most complex dataset of severe asthma ever assembled. This is a difficult task requiring many researchers working together on a common database.

eTRIKS, an organization supporting European projects in the area of knowledge management, is helping U-BIOPRED in this effort by providing support across the data management lifecycle with the tranSMART platform, an open-source knowledge management platform for scientists to share pre-competitive translational research data developed by the tranSMART Foundation and its community. The U-BIOPRED knowledge portal is a collaborative platform where researchers share ideas and workflows analyzing U-BIOPRED data.

In the past, the question has always been “Will translational researchers really use these kinds of tools?” eTRIKS has recently analyzed the data and it is clear that researchers are using the platform at unprecedented levels.

“eTRIKS provides gel without which we could be floating in pools of excess data with no direction,” said Professor Ian Adcock at Imperial College. “U-BIOPRED is using these data to produce at least 60 publications to advance the understanding of the complex causes and subtypes of severe asthma. The eTRIKS/tranSMART platform is a key ingredient to making this happen.”

“As the use of the tranSMART platform continues to rapidly increase, it is exciting to see how it is making a true impact on translational medicine research in a wide array of therapeutic areas,” said tranSMART Foundation CEO . “U-BIOPRED is an excellent example of how data scientists can leverage technology to collaborate, as well as eliminate redundancies and inconsistencies in the process, to advance science.”

is a non-profit organization that provides an open-source, cloud-based, data-sharing and analysis platform that enables scientists at universities, disease foundations, pharmaceutical companies, and government agencies around the world to share pre-competitive data in a way that saves money and time in translating research findings into new therapies and diagnostic tools. Founded to steward the tranSMART platform, the Foundation is headquartered in Wakefield, Massachusetts with Centers of Excellence in Ann Arbor, Mich.; London, England; Boston, Mass.; and Amsterdam, Netherlands. The tranSMART Foundation can also be found on the web at .

eTRIKS is a knowledge management and service infrastructure project aimed at development of a software and hardware system capable of the efficient storage and effective analysis of experimental data from studies in man, in animals and in pre-clinical models, maximizing the scientific knowledge that can be extracted from such studies. The project–s primary goal is to deliver a knowledge management system for ongoing and future IMI studies, such as U-BIOPRED, that require correlative analysis of both pre-clinical and clinical genome-scale biomarker data (genetics and genomics platforms) in conjunction with medical data from clinical trials. This open-source system will also be available for use outside of projects sponsored by IMI. For more information about the eTRIKS project go to .
