Parks Associates: 51% of U.S. pay-TV Subscribers Are Very Interested in Unlimited DVR Storage

DALLAS, TX — (Marketwired) — 06/03/15 — finds that 51% of pay-TV subscribers are very interested in having unlimited space to store DVR recordings, which indicates strong consumer demand for cloud-based DVR services. Currently, over 50% of U.S. broadband homes either include a DVR as part of their pay-TV subscription or have purchased one at retail. The research firm estimates the total number of cloud DVR subscribers in the U.S. will exceed 4.6 million by the end of 2015 and total 24 million by 2018.

Parks Associates will discuss its findings in the complimentary webcast co-hosted by Cisco Systems, on Thursday, June 4, at 2:00 p.m. ET. The webcast, featuring , Product Marketing Manager, Service Provider Video, at Cisco Systems, and , Director of Research at Parks Associates, examines the business and technical challenges and opportunities for evolving today–s video offerings to cloud DVR services, as well as new business models and revenue opportunities created by the greater flexibility of these services.

“Consumer interest in cloud DVR features is strong, particularly the idea of unlimited storage capacity. As with any transition, there are challenges and opportunities for operators looking to expand their services into the cloud,” Sappington said. “Operators are interested in cloud DVR because these services will reduce their long-term hardware costs while providing multiscreen capabilities, enhanced features, scalability, improved flexibility, and new revenue opportunities. In this webcast, we will examine the good and bad of the DVR, virtualizing the DVR, content rights issues, the impact of the cloud DVR, and implementation-related issues.”

“Cisco–s recent finds that time-delayed TV will be the fastest growing residential service by 2019,” Schreiber said. “To meet that growing demand, video operators are looking to transform their business by implementing cloud and virtualization. With Cloud DVR, service providers can provide new experiences to grow subscriber revenue, while reducing costs and enhancing their business and infrastructure agility.”

The webcast will also analyze the significant business and technological challenges of moving DVR functionality from the set-top box to the cloud as well as factors that pay-TV providers and content producers must account for in order to build successful and profitable cloud DVR offerings.
