Square Enix is planning to remake 2006 PlayStation 2 game Final Fantasy XII

Two different Final Fantasy musicians appear to have let slip that another sequel is getting the remake treatment, or is it just a remaster?Square Enix is planning to remake 2006 PlayStation 2 game Final Fantasy XII, or at least that’s according to Distant Worlds conductor Arnie Roth.

Roth has conducted many of the Final Fantasy concerts and you can see a video below of his recent appearance in Pittsburgh, where he clearly announces a Final Fantasy XII ‘remake’.Whether Roth understands the difference between a remake and a remaster we’re not sure, but either way we’re assuming he wasn’t supposed to make the announcement.

You would’ve said there was a good chance he was simply mistaken, but Final Fantasy composer Hitoshi Sakimoto apparently confirmed the news afterwards.Square Enix has already released remasters of Final Fantasy X and X-2, and since XI was a massively multiplayer online game XII should be next in line.

You’d therefore assume that instead of a complete remake it would actually be a similar style of remaster, with higher resolution visuals, improved textures and characters models, but the same basic game underneath.

Final Fantasy XII has its fair share of detractors but it’s arguably the most successful rethink of the series’ formula in the modern era. Even with a forgettable story and some bland characters, it’s still our favourite since the PS one and we’d welcome a chance to play the Gambit system combat in HD.Purists, beware! Final Fantasy VII Remake Director Tetsuya Nomura has confirmed that the battle system in his new game will have “dramatic changes” from the original PlayStation classic.

Speaking with Official PlayStation Magazine, Nomura confirmed that the changes will be occurring, but he dropped a big enough hint to help ease the mind of those worried about what they will be.

“And of course, that being said we want to clarify: We’re not going to be changing it into a shooter or something like that. We are going to be bringing dramatic changes, but we want to make sure it’s still recognizable.”

Dramatic changes, but still recognizable? Well, what could it be? Active Time Battle is probably out, and Nomura hinted that he plans to take hints from… ugh, the 2005 movie, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. The high flying, acrobatic action flick has some impressive stunts, but that’s about all the nice things I can say about it. How does one turn that into an RPG with its stiff roots going back to the NES days?

Will it be an action oriented game similar to Final Fantasy XV, or will it borrow from the ridiculous battle system from Final Fantasy XIII? Or will it be something entirely new? Only time will tell.

Final Fantasy VII Remake will be coming first to the PlayStation 4.
