Big Switch Advances Network Transformation With New Innovations in SDN Fabrics and First Elastic Pricing Model for SDN

SANTA CLARA, CA — (Marketwired) — 08/18/15 — Big Switch Networks®, the leader in bringing hyperscale-inspired networking architecture to data centers worldwide, today announces significant advancements to its SDN fabric products and introduces industry–s first hyperscale-inspired elastic pricing structure. Please join a live launch webinar Wednesday, August 19th at 9am PT to learn .

The latest developments come just one year after Big Switch introduced its vision to make hyperscale-style networking accessible to all organizations. Through an external SDN controller, advanced fabric design and open networking (bare metal) hardware, Big Switch–s SDN solutions accelerate network transformations in mainstream enterprise and carrier data centers. Organizations can now deploy next-generation networks that deliver the benefits of centralized management, network automation and reduced CapEx with open networking switch economics.

ACG Research recently completed an economic analysis comparing the deployment of Big Cloud Fabric to the most commonly encountered alternative found in data center networking as the present mode of operation. The CapEx and OpEx benefits of a next generation SDN fabric are immediate and ongoing. Big Cloud Fabric accelerates new application deployment by 75%, is 12x more efficient in diagnosing and troubleshooting network issues, and lowers overall cost of operations — both CapEx and OpEx — by over 50%*.

“Big Switch is committed to disrupting the status quo of box by box networking, both architecturally and commercially,” said Douglas Murray, CEO, Big Switch Networks. “We have spent the past year executing against this vision and today–s announcement(s) represent the next steps in this journey.”

Big Cloud Fabric is the industry–s first SDN fabric to support open networking switches and deliver hyperscale-inspired innovation to SDN software. Advances in Big Cloud Fabric include deeper integration for both VMware and OpenStack environments which provide organizations with greater networking automation, resiliency, and simplicity.

Big Cloud Fabric 3.0 delivers the industry–s first unified physical + virtual SDN fabric for deploying resilient OpenStack clouds. Big Switch–s Switch Light software is deployed on open networking switches (Switch Light OS) as well as on virtualized KVM servers (Switch Light VX). Its OpenStack Neutron plugin for L2/L3 networking provides resiliency necessary for production-grade OpenStack deployments. The Big Cloud Fabric 3.0 Controller acts as the single pane of glass for provisioning, troubleshooting, visibility and analytics of the entire physical and virtual network environment. This accelerates application deployment, simplifies operational workflows and provides immediate root-cause analysis when application performance issues arise. Big Switch is offering several starter kits, pre-configured with switch hardware, cables, support and Big Cloud Fabric software for OpenStack, starting at $49k. Learn more by visiting .

In addition, Big Cloud Fabric 3.0 deepens its integration across multiple VMware products in support of the Software Defined Data Center (SDDC). This includes natively supporting advanced network automation and deep visibility for vSphere environments, now including vSphere 6; as well as support for VMware Integrated OpenStack (VIO).

Big Monitoring Fabric (formerly Big Tap) is a next-generation network packet broker (NPB) that leverages SDN principles and Open Networking switches to provide scale-out data center monitoring at 30% of the cost of traditional NPBs. Popular customer use cases for Big Monitoring Fabric include: Pervasive monitoring, remote monitoring, mobile/LTE monitoring & DMZ / Inline security.

Big Monitoring Fabric innovations include:

Support for scale-out and low cost monitoring services such as de-duplication and packet modification with an x86 service node, with the Big Monitoring Fabric controller acting as the single pane of glass for both monitoring fabric and service nodes for simplified operational experience

Support high density 100G switch at commodity economics to meet the massive bandwidth demands for monitoring carrier and cloud data centers

Big Switch first brought hyperscale networking architecture to customers, and introduces a hyperscale-inspired elastic pricing model to provide customers with flexibility, reduced cost and a pay-per-use consumption model for Hardware, Software and support. For the same CapEx amount used to purchase the SDN fabric — physical switches, software and support — customers can elect to receive twice the capacity with an “Elastic SDN Fabric” at no additional cost. For example, for the price of a 4 rack configuration, Big Switch would ship 8 racks of SDN fabric. The excess capacity of Elastic SDN Fabric is consumed on an as-utilized basis at $599/switch/month.

Big Switch–s Elastic SDN Pricing model is an industry first and enables customers to spend CapEx for average utilization while enabling their future growth or temporary additional capacity on demand. Initially, Big Switch is offering Elastic SDN Pricing for Big Cloud Fabric in Small, Medium and Large configurations. The current Big Cloud Fabric pricing model and starter kits remain intact for standard configurations.

Big Switch recently announced global expansion and year-over-year growth of 365%. The company now has customer wins across the US, APAC and EMEA regions, in verticals that include financial services, government, telecom service providers, tech and higher education.

Customers include the U.S. Federal Government, Intuit, Clemson University, CleanSafeCloud, and U2 Cloud, a global software and cloud provider, 5 of the top 10 telcos in the world, a leading global credit card company, multiple global financial services firms, media companies, and a leading virtualization provider.

In Q2 2015, Big Switch expanded its global footprint, by announcing new distribution partnerships with Mayflex (UK), Actar (Brazil), NewGen (Australia), and Layer 8 Solutions (Canada) to help meet the increasing demand for mature, automated networking.

The company achieved several milestones in 1H 2015, demonstrating significant growth and accelerating customer adoption of its next-generation networking solutions:

40% QoQ growth for the 6th consecutive quarter

365% YoY growth

Multiple $1MM or greater deals

: “Economic Analysis of Big Cloud Fabric,” Paul Parker Johnson, to be released Aug. 2015

“We have worked with Big Switch for several months to build out our networking infrastructure using a Big Cloud Fabric SDN starter kit,” said Christian Sarrasin, CEO & Founder, CleanSafeCloud. “Initially, Big Switch was appealing because of the CapEx savings it offered and because their product, particularly in terms of OpenStack integration, fit right in our technology strategy. As we built out our infrastructure we were thrilled with the ease of set-up and the support we had from Big Switch each step of the way.”

“It–s a bold and forward-looking move for Clemson to adopt this new networking model in our data centers. We are following in the footsteps of the likes of Google, Facebook and others,” said Daniel Schmiedt, Director of Network Services and Telecommunications at Clemson. “This is the first major production deployment of SDN for Clemson, Big Cloud Fabric is what we–ll be using in the new pod architecture in our data center.”

“The Dell Open Networking strategy is all about giving the customer choices. Through our joint solutions with Big Switch Networks, we are providing our customers with the best options to fit their specific needs,” said Adnan Bhutta, Director, Global Strategy, Dell Networking. “Through our work with Big Switch, our mission to bring next-generation open networking solutions to our customers is being realized.”

“Big Switch–s enterprise-hardened SDN technology creates simplicity in the deployment and management of networks and provides flexibility to scale up to satisfy large and diverse workloads,” said Greg Shipley, Senior Vice President, Mission Manager, In-Q-Tel. “We believe bare-metal infrastructure represents an opportunity for our government customers to run demanding data center networks at scale.”
