iovation Opens New Data Center, Clients Experience Zero Downtime

PORTLAND, OR — (Marketwired) — 08/19/15 — , the global digital reputation authority, announced the opening of a new data center in Hillsboro, Oregon. Opening the data center was essential for iovation in order to keep up with its always-growing number of online transactions it screens for fraudulent behavior. The company analyzes billions of online transactions every year.

When moving to the new data center, there was zero downtime for customers. The company credits two key strategies for this. First, iovation–s open-source technology stack, including Apache Cassandra, powers its active-active architecture for always-on reliability. Second, iovation–s commitment to DevOps ensured the right balance of tools and cross-team collaboration to make it happen.

“Zero downtime is nearly unheard of when moving data centers, but we achieved this thanks to years– worth of work and planning,” said iovation CTO Scott Waddell. “My team is to be commended because they recognized early on that there was no way we could scale to handle our 600 percent annual increase in traffic on our legacy Oracle database. There was zero chance we could have made this seamless move to a new data center without the flexible open-source stack and the DevOps mindset to manage it efficiently.”

iovation–s newest data center, like its others, runs on an in order to accommodate iovation–s growing volume of traffic that is now at 12 million transactions a day. An active-active model means multiple data centers can simultaneously handle increased velocity while eliminating scheduled downtime. This is essential, because there is no time of day that fraudsters are not trying to carry out their schemes. The open-source stack is a cornerstone of this active-active architecture.

, an independent business awards program judged by members of the press and industry analysts, recently named iovation–s CTO Scott Waddell a Technology Executive of the Year after evaluating his efforts in managing the company–s transition to its open-source stack setup. Waddell also received the award for leading the enhancement of iovation–s (software development kit) and launching the company–s services. The company–s mobile SDK leverages iovation–s device intelligence network to determine the trustworthiness of transactions conducted from iOS and Android phones and tablets. The authentication service uses a customer–s known devices to verify their access to online accounts.
