The tranSMART Foundation Releases Results of User Survey

WAKEFIELD, MA — (Marketwired) — 08/31/15 — , a non-profit organization providing a global, open-source knowledge management platform for scientists to share pre-competitive translational research data, today announced the results of its 2015 User Survey. More than 75 organizations responded to the survey with information on how they are deploying the tranSMART Platform and how their users include it in their research programs. The results provided not only valuable data on how the platform is being used by the open source user community, but also a dramatic upward shift in the use of the platform in 2016 which will help the Foundation to plan for the future.

The tranSMART Foundation surveyed its existing user community. The respondents were 34% research organizations, 34% vendors and 32% from academia. The survey found that the tranSMART platform is being used to analyze a wide array of data types, including: clinical (86%), genomics (78%), time series (46%), GWAS (39%), imaging (38%), proteomics (38%), metabolomics (33%), wearable devices (15%), among others.

The survey also found that organizations are often deploying the platform on multiple servers with separate instances for production, development, testing, pilot projects, and for training. Some organizations are using the platform for just a few studies while others have loaded well over 100 studies into the system.

Furthermore, the usage statistics show strong usability and a significant uptick in the future. In 2015, the average number of users within an organization is over 20. In 2016, this number is expected to increase to more than 100, according to the respondents.

“We conducted this survey to help us better understand our user community and enable enhancements to be made to the platform that directly correlate to how it is being used,” said tranSMART Foundation CEO . “These results indicate healthy use of the platform and that our users are finding it helpful in their varying research initiatives. We are thrilled to see the expected dramatic shift in the use of the platform next year as it is rolled out even further within our users– organizations.”
