EnOcean Alliance and AllSeen Alliance Further the AllJoyn Framework for a Seamless Internet of Things

SAN RAMON, CA and SEATTLE, WA — (Marketwired) — 10/19/15 —

In the IoT demo, an energy harvesting wireless switch talked directly to an Electrolux smart fridge, controlling temperature settings with the press of a finger tap — all under the AllJoyn communication umbrella. This is only one example for new applications enabled by a seamless connectivity of different standards. Other examples include IP cameras connected to battery-less wireless sensors, water leakage sensors communicating with the washing machine and the water valve or a system for energy measurement.

All scenarios have one thing in common: the user doesn–t need to deal with the various technologies concerned. Thanks to the standardized AllJoyn language, it can connect devices from different vendors and control all functionalities via a single App.

“With our membership, the EnOcean Alliance introduced a complete ecosystem of more than 400 players of the smart building industry, based on an international standard, to the AllSeen Alliance world. This allowed us to realize a first IoT demo very quickly and easily to show the possibilities of this collaboration,” says Graham Martin, Chairman of the EnOcean Alliance. “The next big step is now to integrate the 1,500 available EnOcean-based products and solutions into the AllSeen Standard.”

For this, the EnOcean Alliance will define an IP specification for its standardized application profiles (EnOcean Equipment Profiles, EEP) that will work on the basis of REST (Representational State Transfer) and use JSON (JavaScript Object Notation). This IP interface will be integrated with open source bridging components within the AllJoyn framework to enable easy and seamless integration of the EnOcean energy harvesting wireless standard into the AllJoyn ecosystem.

“One of the most exciting parts of the AllSeen Alliance Summit is the practical use cases of interoperable IoT devices on display,” said Philip DesAutels, Senior Director, IoT, AllSeen Alliance. “As a community-built open source software, we passionately support members– ideas for new services and interfaces in actual implementation, which is extremely important given the fast-paced adoption seen in our market. Our collaboration with the EnOcean Alliance is a wonderful example of this approach.”

Leading companies worldwide from the building sector collected to form the EnOcean Alliance and establish innovative automation solutions for sustainable building projects — and so to make buildings more energy-efficient, more flexible and lower in cost. The core technology of the Alliance is energy harvesting wireless technology for flexibly positioned and service-free sensor solutions. The EnOcean Alliance aims to internationalize the energy harvesting wireless technology, and is dedicated to creating interoperability between the products of OEM partners. Basis for this is the international standard ISO/IEC 14543-3-1X, which is optimized for wireless solutions with ultra-low power consumption and energy harvesting. More than 400 companies currently belong to the EnOcean Alliance. The headquarters of the non-profit organization is located in San Ramon, California.
