Enterprise Strategy Group Validates Linear Scalability of Cohesity–s Secondary Storage Consolidation Platform in Large 32-Node-Cluster Lab Tests

SANTA CLARA, CA — (Marketwired) — 10/21/15 — , the pioneer of converged secondary storage, today announced the results of independent lab tests showing that the Cohesity Data Platform scales effectively, with performance increasing in near-linear fashion as it expands from four to 32 nodes. The validates Cohesity–s radically efficient approach to secondary storage, which enables businesses to consolidate redundant infrastructure silos for various use cases including data protection, DevOps, fileshares, and analytics. The Cohesity Data Platform is the first distributed backup product that scales out to 32 nodes with no performance impact.

“Lab report by @ESG_global validates industry–s first scalable secondary storage solution from @Cohesity: “

Organizations have traditionally relied on point solutions from multiple vendors to handle different secondary storage needs. But as data growth continues at a rapid pace, managing these segregated infrastructures becomes enormously costly and time-consuming. By consolidating a wide range of functions onto a single platform, Cohesity can cut storage costs in half and make enterprise data management incredibly simple.

The Cohesity Data Platform delivers on the promise of consolidated secondary storage by providing the management flexibility necessary to handle a wide range of workloads. However, with some storage solutions, growth can cause performance problems. Because Cohesity is designed to handle the majority of an organization–s storage needs, the ability to scale without performance impact is crucial.

ESG Lab, the testing division of the global IT research firm Enterprise Strategy Group, audited the performance scalability of the Cohesity Data Platform and validated that both throughput and IOPS increase in a near-linear fashion as additional nodes are added. Ensuring that the Cohesity Data Platform can scale in both size and performance to support additional workloads empowers organizations to grow efficiently, purchasing only what they need and scale seamlessly as data demands grow.

“Cohesity makes an excellent case that all these silos are unnecessary — no matter how much vendors may improve upon their current solutions, they remain individual infrastructure stacks that require separate management,” Kerry Dolan wrote in the ESG Lab Spotlight report. “Cohesity–s approach makes sense — take the data you have in production, copy it for protection, and then leverage that copy for other tasks. To make this work, the platform must be scalable without a performance penalty. ESG Lab–s auditing of Cohesity tests indicates that the performance scalability is very real and customers can add nodes as they need without worrying about hitting bottlenecks found in other storage architectures.”

“Building the industry–s first converged secondary storage solution required us to design a platform that could both handle a wide range of use cases and scale seamlessly, all while maintaining enterprise storage performance levels,” said Cohesity CEO and Founder Mohit Aron. “The validation of this 32-node cluster from ESG Lab shows that our vision for consolidated secondary storage is now a reality that businesses can use to take control in the face of rapid data growth.

ESG Lab conducted its tests on the Cohesity Data Platform using the Linux-based FIO utility as the number of Cohesity nodes scaled from four to 32. The FIO tool was used to first sequentially write eight 2GB files (similar to VMDK files) per node, followed by sequential reads, random reads, and random writes.

The results of the test reveal the clear linear scalability that Cohesity delivers: for both sequential and random reads and writes, as each node is added, throughput (MB/s) and I/O per second (IOPS) continue to increase at a consistent rate, proving there are no bottlenecks in the architecture. The report highlighted Cohesity–s performance scalability for random reads, which are used to characterize common e-mail and database tasks. Cohesity–s linear scalability for random reads means that more of these common applications can be executed simultaneously as nodes are added, while backup is being delivered in parallel.

Cohesity will also be presenting its Data Platform today at Storage Field Day 8, which will include a live demonstration of the platform–s ability to scale from four to 32 nodes, along with more details from the ESG Lab report. Broadcasts will be streamed live from the , and anyone who wants to be part of the discussion can join in on Twitter using the #SFD8 hashtag.
