Telecom Italia Deploys Qwilt to Optimize Over-the-Top Video Content for Improved Customer Quality of Experience

REDWOOD CITY, CA — (Marketwired) — 11/12/15 — , a leading provider of online video delivery and open video caching solutions, announced today that Telecom Italia, a leading provider of wireless and broadband telecommunications services, has deployed Qwilt–s award-winning open caching solution to boost network capacity and improve quality of over-the-top (OTT) streaming video for its more than 30 million customers. Telecom Italia implemented Qwilt–s solution to provide enhanced quality of experience (QoE) for its subscribers using online video and live streaming services from OTT content providers in Italy.

“Today–s perfect storm of online video traffic has created a strategic problem for network operators who must find new ways to cost effectively and rapidly scale their networks to meet demand without sacrificing quality of experience,” said Alon Maor, CEO and co-founder of Qwilt. “Our open caching technology offers network operators a universal and scalable solution for optimizing both live and on-demand streaming video by caching content at the network edge, close to consumers. The outcome is improved QoE for consumers, along with significant CAPEX and OPEX savings and comprehensive media analytics for the network operator. We are pleased Telecom Italia has embraced the full benefits of our open cache solution with their distributed edge deployment.”

Telecom Italia is highly focused on delivering an outstanding experience to its customers and recognized the need to respond to increasing consumption of streaming video with a new architecture to optimize that growing traffic category on its network. The operator deployed the Qwilt open cache solution over a year ago to create a scalable architecture for its network and has experienced improved performance that meets the needs of its customers.

Qwilt–s open cache solution is engineered specifically for high performance and scalable video delivery in the demanding environment of high capacity operator networks. Qwilt–s solution is delivered as a fully managed service to speed deployment and streamline ongoing operation. The broader operator organization — including network planning, engineering and operations teams — benefits from comprehensive media analytics, which offer insights into growth trends, content sources and consumer preferences. By relying on open caching for online video delivery at the network edge, operators can substantially reduce network capital and operational costs — a typical open cache deployment yields a return on investment (ROI) in less than 12 months.

Qwilt and Telecom Italia are both founding members of (SVA), a newly formed industry forum comprised of leading companies from across the online video ecosystem, that is creating the open architecture for streaming and related industry best practices that will allow streaming to scale globally.

The open caching deployment at Telecom Italia was supported by local systems integrator Proxy (). Proxy provided the planning, integration and support services needed to ensure a successful deployment of the open cache architecture across the Telecom Italia network.

Qwilt addresses the impact of OTT video on operator networks with a unified, turnkey solution that combines open caching, video delivery and analytics technologies deployed at the subscriber edge. The Qwilt Video Fabric optimizes delivery of streaming video content to relieve network traffic congestion for operators and deliver a higher quality viewing experience for their customers. A growing number of the world–s leading cable, telecom and mobile service providers rely on Qwilt to optimize their networks to support growing consumer demand for online video content as a primary entertainment source. Qwilt is a founding member of the Streaming Video Alliance, a new industry forum building the open architecture for streaming. Founded in 2010 by industry veterans from Cisco and Juniper, Qwilt is backed by Accel Partners, Bessemer Venture Partners, Cisco Ventures, Disrupt-ive, Innovation Endeavors, Marker and Redpoint Ventures.
