CES 2016: The Eye Tribe Showcases World–s First Eye Tracking Solution for Android-Based VR Headsets

LAS VEGAS, NV — (Marketwired) — 01/07/16 — The Eye Tribe, a 2016 CES Innovation Awards winner and leading innovator in OEM eye tracking software solutions, today announced that it is showcasing the world–s first multi-platform eye tracking solution for Virtual Reality applications at the 2016 International CES in Las Vegas. With market-leading eye tracking performance The Eye Tribe is enabling OEMs to integrate the eye tracking technology into VR headsets on platforms, such as Windows and Android.

Eye Tracking is believed to be a required functionality in the next generation VR headsets, since eye tracking technology can enable higher performance and lower power consumption on the VR headsets by applying foveated rendering. Eye Tracking also provides easier and intuitive control in combination with gesture and voice control.

During the show, which runs Jan. 6-9, The Eye Tribe will demonstrate its new eye tracking software for VR providing high accuracy and critical functionality like foveated rendering. Foveated rendering works by only rendering the specific part of the screen, where the user is currently looking. Foveated rendering will lower GPU load and power consumption significantly, allowing headset manufacturers to increase screen resolutions and refresh rates, while mobile headsets will be able to avoid battery drain.

To allow for the optimal effect of foveated rendering The Eye Tribe VR will set new standards for the abilities of VR headsets with eye tracking frame rates up to 300 Hz. The solution will also offer slip compensation, so that the user can freely take the mask on and off without the need for re-calibration, as well as offering a calibration-free mode. The Eye Tribe VR will offer a patent pending eye biometric authentication method, which will allow for completely effortless authentication of the user and support for Iris recognition.

“Two years ago we launched our eye tracking SDK with the world–s first affordable eye tracker, and showed the world that eye tracking will become a consumer technology. Now we are extremely excited to show how we have advanced our product into virtual reality,” said Sune Alstrup Johansen, CEO of The Eye Tribe. “Eye tracking is a must-have for any VR manufacturers, since foveated rendering can significantly improve the user experience in VR.”

Early access Software Evaluation Kits are available for purchase by OEM customers for prototyping or initial integration work. The Eye Tribe–s VR solution will work with any VR headset platform including Windows and Android. Evaluation kits are currently available for Oculus Rift, GearVR and HTC Vive by contacting The Eye Tribe at
