Hotels And Companies Across Northern Ireland Save Money With Biomass Heating

Many forward-thinking organisations across Northern Ireland are benefiting from a £1 million fund set up to allow them to cut their heating bills and go green in 2016 and beyond. No up front costs are paid by the local business owners, who also benefit from maintenance costs being covered for the next 20 years.

The fund is known as the Northern Ireland Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme (RHI) and the Government will pay approximately £832,000 to the owners for the plant based on consumption. Simply put, the customer just has to pay for their significantly reduced heating bills.

Stable Court in Antrim was the first accommodation provider of its type to install a modular biomass heating solution designed by heat engineering specialists BS Holdings Limited. The Antrim based tourist destination invested £63,000 in the innovative system, which will see it become one of the first district heating systems fuelled by biomass.

Fortwilliam Golf Club, established in 1891, was the first organisation to benefit from an investment of £100,000 to install, operate, fuel and maintain a new biomass heating system that will cut the club–s carbon emissions by an incredible 50,000 kg per annum.

The Charles Hurst Group Ferrari & Maserati Showroom in Belfast also saw a 166,000 kg annual carbon reduction (70%) This was the first small scale absorption chiller project in Ireland and was used as a template by Lookers PLC for future works in the UK to assist them in carbon reduction before mandatory reporting of their corporate carbon footprint.

This is what they had to say!

œMoving our heating system to wood pellets is an important introduction to our Group Carbon Reduction Commitment program for Charles Hurst and indeed Lookers PLC. This new modularised heating system enables us to reduce the carbon footprint of our dealerships and reduce our energy costs in what are difficult trading conditions.” (Mr Bill Henry, Energy Manager, Charles Hurst Group)

However, the most recent establishment to embrace the move to clean energy is a popular Hotel known as the Whitehorse situated in Derry/Londonderry and since joining the fund in late 2015 the Hotel is projected to remove 155,244 tons of CO2 by this most welcome change from fossil fuels.
