24Gb/s SAS Data Storage Standard Advanced by SCSI Trade Association

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — (Marketwired) — 09/15/16 — In a move that will result in enhanced performance of enterprise storage deployments, the (STA) () today announced that the Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) Protocol Layer (SPL-4) of the upcoming 24Gb/s specification has completed letter ballot resolution and will be forwarded to the International Committee for Technology Standards (INCITS) for processing towards public review.

Completion of letter ballot resolution marks a milestone in the standardization process where the developers of the standard considered it to be logically complete. In addition to the significance of this event in formalizing the specification, it also signals the beginning of the implementation phase during which companies will finalize their designs.

“24Gb/s SAS technology will double the effective bandwidth over the current 12Gb/s SAS, continuing SAS–s per lane performance over NVMe,” said Rick Kutcipal, president of the SCSI Trade Association and part of Product Planning and Architecture at Broadcom Limited. “In addition to the performance increase over current 12Gb/s SAS technology, the significant advantages of SAS will continue to be its inherent scalability, manageability and serviceability.”

Reinforcing the role of SAS as the backbone of nearly every enterprise storage deployment, Cameron Brett, director SSD Product Marketing, Toshiba America Electronic Components– SSD Business Unit and STA board member will present “” at the 2016 SNIA Storage Developer Conference in Santa Clara, on Sunday, September 18, 2016 from 1:00 p.m. to 1:50 p.m.

During the presentation, Brett will cover the newest features of SAS such as Zoned Block Commands, Shingled Magnetic Recording, persistent connections and storage intelligence. Brett will also educate attendees on how the versatility, reliability and scalability of SAS have made it the connectivity standard of choice for creating new storage architectures, allowing data center managers to create sustainable storage solutions that scale well into next-generation 24Gb/s SAS solutions and beyond.

STA is also pleased to welcome , a provider of off-the-shelf products and services for Storage Products, Test and Measurement Systems, and IoT Security Products, and , a leader in test and measurement solutions, as the latest members to join its organization to promote and contribute to the evolution of SCSI. The SCSI Trade Association (STA) was established in 1996 to provide a focal point for members to communicate the benefits of SCSI to the industry. STA promotes the understanding and use of Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) technology and influences the evolution of SCSI standards to meet future industry needs. The Association has a nine-member Board of Directors, which oversees the Marketing Communications and Technology Committees and all STA activities.
