Record numbers of exhibitors and sell-out crowds mark ECOC Exhibition’s 22nd year

London, 20 September 2017: The European Conference on Optical Communications (ECOC) 2017 Exhibition – organised by Nexus Media Events Ltd – strengthened its position as Europe’s leading event for the fibre optic industry with a record-breaking attendance to mark its 22nd year.

After selling out exhibition space to 327 exhibitors from around the globe, ECOC 2017 attracted more than 5,900 visitors to the Svenska Massan in Gothenburg, Sweden over three days. Celebrating more than two decades of innovation, the event is renowned for showcasing new and exciting technologies in fibre optic communication, enabling advancements in cloud computing, data centres, 5G and the Internet of Things.

This year’s event saw several major product announcements and exclusive demonstrations. Keysight Technologies launched its newest test solutions for PAM-4, NRZ and 400G optical receivers, while Fujikura used Sweden’s position as the leading European market for ribbon splicing to debut its new line of Bluetooth-enabled splicers, which allow pairing through a smartphone application which also monitors battery and power usage.

Alongside the product launches, Finisar gave an industry-first demonstration of its QSFP28 eSWDM4 module transmitting live data over 300 meters of OM4 multimode fibre, displaying an error-free link using Forward Error Correction – something which will be crucial in delivering cost-effective 100G solutions.

As well as the exhibition, the Market Focus sessions – sponsored by Inphi – were once again a key highlight, with keynote speakers from 26 different companies and organisations. Presenters from tech giants Intel, Huawei, Cisco, Ericsson and Microsoft discussed a diverse range of industry topics including fibre access, the role of cloud and data centres, optical network agility and photonic integration to an attentive audience throughout the three days.

Beverley Lucas, Event Director at Nexus Media Events, said: “This year’s ECOC Exhibition has enhanced the event’s reputation as one of the world’s leading optic communications gatherings, with exhibition space sold out for the first time since 2001. Since our first exhibition in 1995, we’ve witnessed the industry evolve immensely and the Market Focus sessions are a great opportunity to bring together thought-leaders and experts to share their innovations, showcase their latest technologies and to actively discuss the trends that are shaping the market landscape.”

The ever-popular FTTx Centre and CTTS Training Zone returned for 2017, providing live, interactive demonstrations of fibre deployment and free bite-size training courses on key industry techniques to the attending visitors.

“It feels like there has been a great energy around this year’s ECOC Exhibition and it’s certainly one of the busiest we’ve been to,” said Mike Zammit, Vice President and General Manager Connectivity Solutions, Go!Foton. “The European market is always receptive to new ideas and innovations, so ECOC is the ideal place for us to exhibit our solutions.”

ECOC 2018 will be held in Rome, Italy from Monday, September 24 to Wednesday, September 26.
