PLX Demonstrates Powerful PCI Express Solutions With Avago, Marvell at Intel Developer Forum

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — (Marketwire) — 09/12/11 — PLX Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: PLXT), the leader in high-speed connectivity solutions for the enterprise data center, is welcoming visitors to the Intel Developers Forum (IDF) to witness two extraordinary demonstrations highlighted by industry leaders in their respective fields, and focused on the PCI Express (PCIe) standard-s superior high-performance and widespread applications in new and growing markets. Hosted in the PLX® booth (#814) at IDF, the showcase includes cutting-edge technology from Avago®, Marvell® and ATTO.

The first demonstration delivers on the PCIe Gen3 promise of plug-and-play with no special software, highlighting the data center readiness and ubiquity of PCIe. Avago Technologies high-density MiniPOD parallel fiber optic modules, enabled by PLX PCIe Gen3 switches, extend traffic box-to-box for 30 meters with amazing x8 connectivity at 64Gbps. This performance alone challenges all other connectivity choices by eliminating the complicated, latency-ridden conversion of standards. New Gen3 devices are rapidly entering the market to take advantage of this performance, as shown in this five-bay expansion card demonstration. PCIe Gen3 performance is now available with a new class of SAS/SATA PCIe Gen3-enabled host bus adapter (HBA) cards introduced by ATTO. In addition, the demonstration combines the seamless integration of new SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.0) adaptors — again providing a channel for maximum throughput without the use of additional software or hardware. With PCIe flourishing in today-s SSD market, PLX Gen3 switches are shown automatically down-training to Gen2, thus enabling future-proof, market-ready SSD solutions.

“The PCI Express specification continues to see rapid adoption across multiple market segments, both in terms of applications and how it-s being deployed,” said Al Yanes, president and chairman of the PCI-SIG®. “PLX Technology-s PCI Express 3.0 switch demonstration at IDF reflects this impressive growth, while highlighting how new uses of existing technologies, such as optical cabling, further enables system and board designers to take advantage of PCI Express technology as an impressive and versatile interconnect solution.”

“Avago is excited about working with PLX to bring optical solutions to PCIe Gen3 applications,” said Victor Krutul, director of marketing for the Fiber Optics Products Division at Avago. “Our MiniPOD embedded optical modules enable distance extension up to 100 meters as well as higher interconnect density within a system.”

The second demonstration focuses on the industry-leading performance of Marvell-s SSD controllers, enabled by PLX PCIe switches, in an enterprise storage application. Aggregate performance of four SSD Million IO Per Second (MIOPS) cards reaches an astounding 2.5 million IOPs (4K random reads). Four Marvell MIOPS cards are aggregated through a PLX multi-host PCIe Gen2 switch (96 lanes, 24 ports) housed on a PLX I/O expansion module. This PLX multi-host feature allows the switch to be partitioned in half with data streaming to and from multiple servers, thus reducing cost by eliminating the need for a second switch. Exclusive PLX PCIe x16 port-to-server support offers 16GB/s data transfer capacity in each direction. Each Marvell MIOPS card has eight flash controllers aggregated by a PLX PCIe switch (16 lanes, 16 ports). Marvell-s four MIOPS cards aggregate 1TB of NAND storage.

“Marvell is extremely pleased with the performance we have proven with our new MIOPS cards and the excellent PCI Express support we have received from PLX,” said Shawn Kung, title, Marvell. “The 2.5 million IOPs performance is an industry-leading response to a swiftly growing demand from the market for the intense storage requirements seen in today-s data centers.”

Visit PLX at IDF booth #814 at Moscone West Convention Center in San Francisco on September 13-15 for a personal demonstration. PLX will also demonstrate its latest USB 3.0 bridge solutions in the Renesas Electronics America booth (#863) located in IDF-s SuperSpeed USB Community.
