Advanced Parking Meters Help Increase Asbury Park-s Parking Revenue by More Than 60 Percent

VANCOUVER, BC — (Marketwire) — 11/01/11 — Today, Digital Payment Technologies () (DPT) announced that its deployment of 100 LUKE multi-space parking pay stations in the city of Asbury Park, New Jersey, has delivered more than a 60 percent increase in parking revenue for the city. DPT-s flexible Enterprise Management System () has also enabled the city to utilize the pay stations to manage and distribute beach passes. During a tough economy, having the ability to increase revenues while stabilizing existing taxes has been vital for the city.

Asbury Park is a 1.5 square mile city on the New Jersey Shore, with high seasonal fluctuations and a prominent tourism industry, both of which drive a large portion of the city-s economy. Because its outdated single-head parking meters proved difficult for collection and enforcement, and previous multi-space pay stations required frequent and labor-intensive service and maintenance, significant potential revenue was being left on the table. In early 2011, after much research, Asbury Park made the switch to LUKE pay stations from DPT. The new pay stations were installed and supported by Integrated Technical Systems () (ITS).

“Our goals were to manage parking, create customer turnover, and raise alternative revenue,” said Ed Johnson, Mayor of Asbury Park.

“DPT-s machines resemble an ATM and are incredibly intuitive,” added Brian Grant, Asbury Park city engineer. “Moreover, the machines are flexible and reliable, which has helped us meet the unique needs of our city, and consumers have been very satisfied.”

In addition to paying for parking on the LUKE pay stations, beachgoers can also purchase beach passes at the same time using Pay-and-Display mode. City officials estimate that 90 percent of people parking on the waterfront are going to the beach. Through a partnership with Live Nation, the pay stations will soon be able to accept parking coupons for the local concert venue.

“We build our pay station hardware and software so they can adapt to the diverse environments of our customers,” said Alan Menezes, vice president marketing and product management at Digital Payment Technologies. “We are happy to have helped Asbury Park design a solution to fit their needs through seasonal and special event fluctuations, while helping the city to generate revenue for improvement projects.”

The pay stations are also weather-resistant. “When Hurricane Irene came through earlier this year, two of the pay stations near the lake had water halfway up the base, but as soon as the water receded, we turned the pay stations back on, and they worked like new,” recalled Grant.

Additional features include multiple payment options, including cash, coins and credit or debit cards. The city is testing smart card and Pay-by-Phone capabilities. By offering flexibility of payment increments, consumers can purchase the time they need to suit their needs at a price that makes sense, whether that-s 15 minutes at a time or $10 flat fee for all day.

Due to the satisfaction by Asbury Park-s city officials and community members, the city has elected to install additional LUKE pay stations throughout other areas of the city, including the central business district, Main Street and is considering expanding to parking garages.

Digital Payment Technologies (DPT) is an innovative leader in the design, manufacture, and distribution of electronic pay stations, management software, and online services for the parking industry. DPT products provide complete financial tracking, control, and reporting on parking revenue collected by cities, municipalities, universities, parking management companies, private operators, and national parks, from customer payment through to bank deposit.
