As NEET Figures Rise, Young People Need to Be Educated About the Advantages of Apprenticeships Schemes, Says Perspective

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM — (Marketwire) — 11/04/11 — The volume of 16 to 24 year olds classified as “Neets” – not in employment, education or training – has reached almost one million. As a result, young people need to be educated to the many advantages that an apprenticeship scheme can offer, according to Perspective, the Midlands-based pioneers of software.

The NEET figures, for the second quarter of 2011, are the highest for this time of year for five years – and 107,000 higher than for the same period last year.

Apprenticeship schemes are heavily backed by the government and provide young people with an opportunity to earn while they learn in an area of direct interest to them. However, of the 326,000 people starting apprenticeships in the first nine months of 2010-11, 121,000 were aged over 25. This was against 102,900 16-18 year olds and 102,800 19-24 year olds.

Paul Davis, managing director of Perspective commented: “Apprenticeship schemes can turn the lives of those out of work around. Not everyone enjoys school and therefore leave without achieving any formal qualifications and soon find themselves out of work when school finishes. Without the knowledge of the options available to them many soon fall into the category of being a NEET. Apprenticeship schemes can turn the lives of those out of work around and therefore the government, perhaps in partnership with local businesses, need to market their availability and the advantages they can offer.”

Apprenticeship schemes can also change the fortunes of businesses as they provide the opportunity to build and education their staff from the ground up by equipping learners with the skills and knowledge needed to quickly become productive and a valuable member of the workforce, which in turn, enhances motivation and efficiency at work.

The success rates of apprenticeship schemes can also be enhanced by with software such as Perspective-s Sunesis. This allows training providers and to confront any problems such as a dip in performance or attendance before they become a serious issue.

Paul continued: “Tracking progression is an important part of any scheme to increase success rates and Sunesis is an easy means of doing just this. It also provides the means for effective to ensure full entitlement is received and schemes can operate to their full potential.”
