HSPA+ Deployments in Latin America Accelerating

BELLEVUE, WA — (Marketwire) — 11/07/11 — Latin America is seeing remarkable uptake of HSPA+ mobile broadband technologies with an additional three commercial networks launched in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay during the first week of November. There are 66 HSPA networks in the region, of which technology and available in 17 countries, reports 4G Americas, a wireless industry trade association representing the 3GPP family of technologies.

“HSPA and HSPA+ are fueling the mobile broadband revolution in Latin America providing the foundation for which high speed data services are delivered on smartphones and other sophisticated devices such as tablets,” said Erasmo Rojas, Director of Latin America and the Caribbean at 4G Americas.

According to a recent study by Yankee Group, smartphone sales as a percentage of total handset sales in Latin America will grow from 3 percent in 2008 to an expected 19 percent in 2011.

The increasing momentum of HSPA and HSPA+ deployments are providing Latin Americans with fast, easy and efficient ways to connect to mobile broadband for professional and personal uses of value-added services and applications. As of 2Q 2011, operators were reporting an average of 22 percent of monthly revenue from data services. Total subscriptions for wireless service in Latin America surpassed 615 million as of 3Q 2011, according to estimates from Informa Telecoms & Media. UMTS-HSPA+ accounts for 11 percent of all subscribers in the region (September 2011) and by the end of 2016 it is expected that UMTS-HSPA+ will account for a 50 percent market share of all wireless technologies in the region.

“HSPA+, with its continuously evolving and growing ecosystem, is becoming ubiquitous in major cities throughout Latin America and is setting the stage for future deployments of LTE in 2012 and beyond as operators gain access to new spectrum assets,” Rojas added.

The success of the HSPA evolution is paving the way for LTE trials and launches expected in many Latin America countries in 2012. With new spectrum being made available at 1.7/2.1 GHZ, 2.6GHz and soon 700 MHz, LTE is currently in trials in 11 countries with potential launches in Colombia, Mexico and Puerto Rico during the first half of 2012. There are already 37 operators in 15 countries in the region committed to deploying LTE pending the acquisition of spectrum resources.

Worldwide, there are over with 168 of them upgraded to HSPA+ as the 3GPP standard continues to evolve to faster speeds and lower latency. 3GPP technical evolution from Release 7 to Release 10 has pushed possible HSPA peak theoretical data rates from 14 Mbps to 168 Mbps. Continued enhancements in 3GPP Release 11 will again double this capability to a possible peak theoretical data rate of 336 Mbps.
