Knovel Expands Critical Content to Help Engineers Streamline Material Selection in Product Design

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM — (Marketwire) — 12/20/11 — , the leading provider of a Web-based application integrating technical information with analytical and search tools, today introduced Knovel Databases, a series of new offerings in the company-s growing Critical Content line addressing gaps in convenient access to authoritative engineering data.

Knovel aims to deliver content that allows engineers to find answers dramatically faster than they would otherwise. Knovel sources validated content from more than 90 publishing partners, including prominent engineering societies and associations. When critical content is not available from partners, Knovel strategically works with credible sources and renowned experts to create it.

Knovel-s Critical Content line launched several years ago with to provide access to physical constants and other properties of over 20,000 inorganic and organic compounds, including 385 common solvents. Today, Knovel-s Critical Tables are among the top three resources accessed on Knovel.

Most recently, Knovel commissioned the creation of Knovel Databases to provide its engineering customers with highly interactive tables, graphs and data compiled from authoritative sources.

The first two Knovel Databases are now available. The Magnesium Alloy Database, developed by J. Gilbert Kaufman, covers properties of magnesium alloys – of particular interest to many of Knovel-s automotive and aerospace customers as pressure grows to identify new ways of lowering fuel loads and consumption. The Knovel Optical and Filter Glass Database is a unique compilation of properties of commercial optical and filter glasses from commercial manufacturers around the world. Dedicated resources are in place to expand Knovel-s Critical Content offering in 2012, and development for additional databases is underway.

“Expanding Knovel-s Critical Content line is among our strategic priorities to ensure our customers have access to hard to find technical information when and where they need it,” says Chris Forbes, Knovel-s president and CEO. “We have a dedicated program in place, along with a significant investment, to continue to expand content both in depth and breadth. Knovel-s Magnesium Alloy and Optical and Filter Glass databases are just the first of many enhancements you-ll see in the coming year as we move forward full-force.”

Knovel Databases help engineers make critical decisions more effectively, including:

“Our ecosystem of publishing partners has increased 25 percent in the last two years, but even with that growth, there is demand for information outside the scope of any one partner,” says Sasha Gurke, Knovel-s co-founder and senior vice president. “It-s time consuming for engineers to locate reliable data for very detailed requirements. Knovel-s goal is to make this data highly discoverable and more interactive.”

The exclusive, interactive content from the first two databases will supplement the company-s existing subject areas. The Magnesium Alloy Database will complement the Aluminum Alloy Database in the Metals & Metallurgy subject area. The Knovel Optical and Filter Glass Database will be an anchor in the Optics & Photonics subject area, representing the properties of glasses from 16 manufacturers and growing.
