NEW YORK, NY — (Marketwire) — 08/12/12 — Media6Degrees (m6d), the advertising technology pioneer that revolutionizes marketing with its ProspectRank platform, announced today that chief scientist Claudia Perlich has been selected as the 2012 winner of the best paper award in the industry and government track by ACM SIGKDD. The paper, titled “Bid Optimizing and Inventory Scoring in Targeted Online Advertising,” will be presented at the annual KDD conference in Beijing, China on Wednesday, August 15.
The KDD conference is the premier global forum for data mining researchers and practitioners from academia, industry and government. This year-s gathering aims to share ideas, research results and experiences, with a particular focus on big data and advanced analytics.
The winning paper was co-authored by Brian Dalessandro, Ori Stitelman, Troy Raeder and Foster Provost, all of m6d. Perlich, who joined the company from IBM in February 2010, has been published in over 30 scientific journals, and holds multiple patents in machine learning. No stranger to success in data mining competitions, Perlich has won the prestigious KDD Cup three times for her work in the past five years, as well as the KDD best paper award for data leakage in 2011. She has a PhD in information systems from NYU and an MA in computer science from the University of Colorado.

In “Bid Optimizing and Inventory Scoring in Targeted Online Advertising,” Perlich and team developed methods for measuring the impact of publisher inventory on ad effectiveness after controlling for the specific user and the advertiser in question. These methods can be applied in general to assess inventory quality, and specifically to define bid optimization strategies that maximize ad effectiveness. After deploying these methods in actual campaigns, m6d realized a better than 20 percent increase in ad effectiveness without incurring a cost increase. Looking to the future, Perlich demonstrated the potential of this research to expand the scope of bid optimization by bringing together, in real time, additional information from the cookie, such as age and activity level, and combining the performance-centric optimization approach with other tuning parameters.
