Knovel Expands Academic Customers in EMEA

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM — (Marketwire) — 03/05/12 — Queen Mary, University of London, The University of Southampton and The University of the West of England are among a growing number of Universities across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, which over the last six months have added Knovel to their engineering and science reference libraries. is a Web-based application integrating technical information with analytical and search tools.

With Knovel students can conduct research, select materials, manipulate graphs, charts and equations to find answers, improve processes and document project plans. Knovel offers validated technical references across 28 subject areas; content is aggregated from more than 90 trusted sources, including professional societies and publishers.

Julia Shelton, Director of Taught Programmes, School of Engineering and Materials Science, Queen Mary, University of London, commented, “Knovel is an invaluable resource for students that they can access through a robust and transparent interface. In the future, we envisage being able to fully integrate Knovel into the teaching programme and for Knovel to become a valuable resource for everybody”.

Knovel is used by universities of all sizes and now in the UK number 30, including Imperial College, London, University College London and the University of Manchester. Worldwide Knovel has more than 700 customers including major employers such as BP, Rolls-Royce and GlaxoSmithKline.

Martin Beeson, Senior Academic Liaison Librarian, Science & Engineering at Queen Mary, University of London, Library Services, explains, “Knovel is a time-saving device enabling students to draw on numerous reference sources instantaneously. It provides quality cited reference information and addresses the issue of some students going straight to Wikipedia. As it is interactive, students can download data and share their work – we place a great emphasis on group work as it lends itself to the workplace. Knovel also contributes to graduate employability as it is an industry standard.”

The new customers in mainland Europe include Switzerland-s The Library for the Research Institutes (Swiss Federal Institute for Aquatic Research, Paul Scherrer Institute, Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, The Snow and Landscape Research and Swiss Federal Institute for Materials Science and Technology). Poland-s Maritime University of Szczecin and The State School of Higher Education in Chelm are also new customers as is The Czech Technical University and Kazakhstan-s Nazarbayev University.

Saudi Arabia-s King Abdul-Aziz City for Science and Technology and King Abdul Aziz University have added Knovel to their resources as have The University of Cape Town and The University of Witwatersrand in South Africa.

Last Spring, Knovel established a UK based team to support academic and corporate customers in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Knovel-s Director of Corporate Sales-EMEA, and a former practicing Aeronautical Engineer, Andy Brown said, “The current generation of students intuitively use online tools, and they are used to sharing knowledge instantly and interactively. The fields of science and engineering demand compliance, and with Knovel-s validated content and data, students have convenient access to credible information.”

The annual Knovel University Challenge, which sets students real world engineering problems and in 2011 attracted over 12,000 entries worldwide, has become a required part of the induction programme for engineering students at University College London.

For the first time Knovel is exhibiting (Stand 14) at UKSG, Glasgow, 26-28 March 2012.
