Blackfoot Awards Largest Scholarship Contribution in Its History: Doubling Commitment to Local Students

MISSOULA, MT — (Marketwire) — 04/27/12 — Blackfoot Telephone Cooperative is pleased to announce the most substantial scholarship contribution ever approved by the Board of Trustees, doubling its annual support to $31,000. The Board recently awarded 39 scholarships through the Blackfoot Scholarship Fund which awards between $500 and $1,000 in individual scholarships to outstanding high school students or post-secondary students continuing their education in the following Fall. The goal of Blackfoot-s Scholarship Fund is to support and encourage continuing education for member-owners residing in Blackfoot-s service territories.

“We-re thrilled to honor the high school success and future ambitions of our Cooperative students through our $31,000 in scholarship assistance. We will recognize all 39 college scholarship winners and honor these future leaders at Blackfoot-s Annual Meeting on Saturday, May 5,” said Bill Squires, CEO of Blackfoot. “Scholarships are just one way we can give back to our Cooperative communities. We also donated $230,000 last year to support Cooperative community events, causes and improvements including nine educational programs.”

For the 2011-2012 academic year, Blackfoot received many applications from students living in Blackfoot communities throughout Western Montana. Selection criteria include: academic performance, letters of recommendation, and a personal letter of application listing activities, goals and achievements. After review, the Board of Trustees selected 39 finalists.
