Cooperation between ITI and ExpertControl – Integration of ecCST and ecICP sets new standards for feedback control design

Dresden/Munich, 11th May 2010 – ITI, one of the leading software and engineering companies for system simulation, and ExpertControl, manufacturer of highly innovative engineering software products for simulation environments today announce their collaboration on feedback control design. The integration of ExpertControls’ feedback control design tools ecCST and ecICP in SimulationX enables engineers to design optimal controller settings automatically at an early development stage. Calculations of transfer functions and feedback controllers are therewith significantly simplified and accelerated.

The cooperation between both companies focuses on the synergy between their individual core competences in system simulation and feedback control design. ExpertControls’ feedback control tools ecICP and ecCST are now integrated in the interdisciplinary simulation platform SimulationX to such an extent that simulation models for power transmission, hydraulics, electrical and mechanical engineering can be developed in a more efficient way. Therewith, engineers obtain a one-stop-solution for modeling, simulation and feedback control of physical effects to solve even risky development tasks like system identification or model-based feedback control design easily and quickly. SimulationX proofs once more to be the perfect software for interdisciplinary engineering enabling users to benefit from ExpertControl’s feedback control quality: Realizing specified closed-loop transition times related to reference value changes and disturbance rejection in all operating points.

Starting point for the collaboration between ITI and ExpertControl was the growing demand from engineers for an out of the box solution which facilitates the efficient design of even highly-complex feedback controllers directly in one simulation environment. Until now, engineers had to use different tools dedicated to the various physical disciplines. In consequence, they had to cope with interrupted workflows, incompatible data and great manual effort for adaptation. Apart from this, feedback control design tasks often failed due to the fact that engineers frequently hit the functional limit of traditional tools. At the end, in the worst case, this could delay development projects or even put the overall feasibility at risk. Thanks to the integration of their world-wide established tools, ITI and ExpertControl now provide the market with a user-friendly simulation platform supporting the fully-automated feedback control design.

“In only 5 steps controllers and controller parameters have been designed for even complex dynamic simulation models. Transfer function and controller parameters will be automatically calculated with ecICP, used to control the system with ecCST and can be immediately further used in the SimulationX model. Now, plant and machine developers possess a unique opportunity for an optimal application of the overall system”, says Thomas Neidhold, ITI Manager Software Development.

„As high-pressure deadlines determine the quality of control behavior, engineers all over the world will benefit from this cooperation. With ExpertControls’ tools now being integrated into the SimulationX modeling environment, the user just sets the controllers’ specific speed parameter and quickly receives the desired quality”, emphasizes Dr. Helmuth Stahl, Managing Director of ExpertControl GmbH. „In the future, optimal controls can be calculated within SimulationX in a fully automated way even in early development stages. This not only significantly shortens development time. Moreover, unpredictable risks in project delivery times and in bringing plants and machines into service are eliminated.”

About SimulationX
SimulationX – The Driving Force in System Simulation determines the level of modeling, simulating and optimizing complex technical systems. The software models the interaction of components from a multitude of domains including their mutual interaction and feedback on one platform. This significantly distinguishes SimulationX from any other kind of CAE software (FEM, CFD, MBS). SimulationX is the standard in software for evaluation of the interaction of all components in technical systems. It is the universal CAE tool for modeling, simulating and analyzing physical effects – with ready-to-use model libraries for 1D mechanics, 3D multi-body systems, power transmission, hydraulics, pneumatics, thermodynamics, electrics, electrical drives, magnetic as well as controls – post-processing included. SimulationX fully supports Modelica® language and offers a wide range of open, comprehensive CAx-interfaces. Further information on www.simulationx.com.

About ecCST and ecICP
The combination of ecICP and ecCST allows the realization of optimal feedback control systems within a short period of time without the need to explore complex theoretical methods. From supposedly easy controller systems to state controllers for nonlinear, dead-time MIMO (multiple input/output) systems, ecICP is the engineering tool to design all theses feedback controllers. Based on simulation data or measured data, ecICP executes fully automated system identification and feedback control design. The optimal controller parameters will be calculated within few seconds and can be used in classical controller structures such as PID and also in more advanced controller algorithms available in ecCST. ecCST is a flexible and adaptive controller algorithm, which allows not only to adapt to classical controller structures for second order systems but also more advanced controller structures for systems with multiple oscillations. Furthermore, ecCST supports switching between these controller structures according to user-defined operating points to adapt to the corresponding system dynamics.
