Wilocity and Cisco to Accelerate New 802.11ad Wi-Fi Standard for Enterprise Wireless Networking

SUNNYVALE, CA — (Marketwired) — 11/06/13 — Wilocity, the leading developer of 60 GHz multi-gigabit wireless chipsets, today announced a collaboration with Cisco, the worldwide leader in IT, on product development for enterprise applications. The companies will work together initially on new network topologies and a new class of wireless solutions that utilize tri-band Wi-Fi from Wilocity with data rates up to 5 Gbps. These solutions will aim to increase wireless speed and network capacity and improve wireless access to enterprise resources.

Tri-band Wi-Fi solutions from Wilocity integrate the multi-gigabit performance of the 802.11ad operating in the 60 GHz spectrum band along with 802.11a/n/ac that operates in the 5 GHz band and 802.11b/g/n in the 2.4 GHz band. The 802.11ad standard avoids the degradation of wireless performance that can occur in these bands when operating in dense usage environments. However, as 802.11ad doesn-t go through most walls or people, the tri-band capability will automatically switch from 60 GHz to the next best available performance band when 802.11ad connectivity is not available. Wilocity tri-band Wi-Fi provides the needed coverage, performance, network capacity, and compatibility to enable next generation high-performance wireless networks.

“We see enormous potential and demand for increased wireless capacity and performance in the enterprise, and Wilocity-s expertise in 60 GHz is a key component to satisfying that demand,” said Bob Friday, chief technology officer for the Enterprise Networking Group at Cisco. “We-re committed to innovation and improving the user experience in a business setting. Tri-band Wi-Fi from Wilocity provides much needed network capacity and speed in the enterprise as it supports data rates far faster than other current wireless standards, opening the way to new use cases and applications.”

The 802.11ad standard is ratified by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and incorporated into the Wi-Fi Alliance portfolio. This marks a new era in wireless with speeds more than 10 times faster than mainstream Wi-Fi. Adoption of this technology is already well underway. In September, Wilocity announced the integration of 802.11ad into several new Ultrabooks as a follow up to the initial launch in February.

“We-re excited to be working with Cisco on the development and implementation of tri-band Wi-Fi solutions to provide leading-edge enterprise wireless capabilities,” said Tal Tamir, chief executive officer, Wilocity. “Our tri-band Wi-Fi technology will augment existing wired and wireless infrastructures and enhance multi-user collaboration. Working together, Cisco and Wilocity will accelerate market adoption of 802.11ad in the enterprise and provide users with unparalleled wireless performance and network capacity.”

Founded in 2007, Wilocity is the leading developer of 60 GHz multi-gigabit wireless chipsets, allowing revolutionary performance and capacity by enabling a tenfold increase compared to legacy Wi-Fi. The company is committed to making wireless the ubiquitous connectivity solution for mobile platforms everywhere — where wireless is simply faster and easier than wires — in the office, at home, and on the road. Wilocity has partnered with industry leaders to provide greater wireless performance in short-range wireless networking, docking, point-to-point outdoor links, and more. Backed by high profile investors, Wilocity is born out of a unique combination of deep industry experience, success and passion for wireless technology, leadership in the Wi-Fi Alliance and all other relevant standards bodies, and proven engineering innovation.
